Cypress Island Sea Kayaking

Please remember that this is just a sample itinerary of our two day kayak adventure. Weather and tides, as well as the needs of the group may change this trip.

Moving counter-clockwise around Cypress Island, the red dots show our available campsites:

  1. Strawberry Island; A beautiful little island just offshore of Cypress. Campsites are limited, and it is exposed to weather coming in from the south. We can't always stay here, but it sure is nice when we do!
  2. Pelican Beach; This is the most popular campsite on Cypress Island. We meet sea kayakers from all over the world who travel out here just to stay on Pelican Beach. Great views of  Mt. Baker and the Cascade Mountains can be had here. If you wake early you will be treated to an amazing sunrise right over the Caldera of Mt. Baker (sometimes you can even see the plume of steam from the fumarole).
  3. Cypress Head; This is a fantastic place to camp. On outgoing tides (mornings in the summer) you have a real good chance of being awakened to the sounds of our local killer whales as they are heading south. When they come by here they are often quite close to the rocks. This is one of our favoritr campgrounds in the San Juan Islands. If you want to walk up the steep trail, you can get to an amazing vantage point with views North, South, and East.
